CV template for South Africa
The structure local employers expect, in a single-column layout that applicant tracking software can read. Use it as your starting point, then let CVamp match your wording to each specific posting and export a clean PDF — free.
What a South African CV should contain
Six sections, in this order. Two to three pages is normal here — you do not need to squeeze everything onto one.
1. Name and contact details
Full name, city and province, mobile number and a professional email address. A LinkedIn URL if you keep it current. No photo, ID number or date of birth needed unless the application asks for them.
2. Professional summary
Three or four lines describing who you are professionally, your years of experience and the kind of role you are applying for. Rewrite this for each posting — it is the part recruiters read first.
3. Work experience
Reverse chronological order. For each role: job title, employer, city and the months and years you worked there, then three to six bullets describing what you actually did and delivered.
4. Education and qualifications
Qualification, institution and year completed. Include matric if it is your highest qualification, plus any SETA, professional body or short-course certificates relevant to the role.
5. Skills
A plain list of the systems, tools, methods and languages you genuinely use. Mirror the wording the posting uses where it is true of you.
6. References
Two contactable referees with their role and relationship to you, or simply 'References available on request'. Always ask permission first.
The single-column layout
This is the shape of the PDF CVamp exports — plain text, standard headings, no tables or graphics. Example content below is illustrative.
Why this template is the safest one to use
Designed templates look good on screen and fall apart in a parser. Every CVamp export follows these rules.
- One column, top to bottom — nothing hidden in a sidebar or table
- Standard headings screening software recognises
- Plain text, no icons, emojis or decorative characters
- Consistent month-and-year dates
- Text-based PDF, never a scan or an image
- Wording matched to the posting you are answering
A template only gets you a shape. What decides the outcome is whether the content speaks to the specific posting. CVamp rewrites the experience already in your CV to match the employer's language — it never invents employers, dates, qualifications or metrics, and you can edit every word before exporting.
Common questions
How long should a South African CV be?
Two to three pages is normal locally. Graduates and first-time job seekers are usually fine with one to two.
Do I need a photo, ID number or date of birth?
No. Leave them off unless an application specifically asks — it keeps the layout clean and limits the personal information you hand over.
Is it free?
Tailoring your CV and downloading the PDF is free, no card required. The matching cover letter and Skills Match Score come with any paid plan.
